How is a Transvaginal Ultrasound Done?
The procedure is simple, safe, and usually painless. Here is what to expect:
Preparation
- No full bladder is required. In fact, you may be asked to empty your bladder before the scan.
- You will lie on an exam table, similar to a gynecological exam.
Probe insertion
- A thin, sterile ultrasound probe (transducer), about the size of a tampon, is gently inserted into the vagina.
- A protective cover and lubricating gel are used to ensure comfort.
- The probe emits sound waves that create images on the monitor.
Imaging and assessment
- The doctor or sonographer moves the probe slightly to visualize the uterus, ovaries, and lining.
