What is a Transvaginal Ultrasound?

A Transvaginal Ultrasound (TVS) is a type of pelvic imaging test that provides detailed pictures of the uterus, ovaries, cervix, and endometrial lining using a thin ultrasound probe inserted into the vagina. Unlike an abdominal ultrasound, TVS offers high-resolution, close-up images, making it ideal for evaluating fertility health and monitoring ovulation or early pregnancy.

At Zemya IVF & Fertility Clinics, we use advanced sonography techniques in Delhi to diagnose fertility issues, monitor follicle growth, guide procedures like IUI or embryo transfer, and assess treatment success. It’s one of the most important tools in personalized fertility care.

When is a Transvaginal Ultrasound Recommended?

A TVS scan is commonly performed to:

  • Assess the uterus and ovaries for abnormalities
  • Track follicular development during ovulation induction
  • Measure endometrial lining thickness before IUI or IVF
  • Detect cysts, fibroids, or polyps that affect fertility
  • Confirm ovulation timing for timed intercourse or insemination
  • Guide procedures like egg retrieval, embryo transfer, or oocyte pick-up
  • Diagnose PCOS, endometriosis, or pelvic infections
  • Monitor early pregnancy and rule out ectopic pregnancy

It may also be done prior to embryo transfer to optimize the uterine environment for implantation.

Why is Sonography Important in Fertility Care?

  • Provides real-time imaging of reproductive organs
  • Helps doctors personalize stimulation protocols in IUI/IVF
  • Tracks egg growth and ovulation timing
  • Identifies conditions like polyps, fibroids, or ovarian cysts
  • Helps decide the ideal time for embryo transfer
  • Monitors response to medication and adjusts doses if needed
  • Offers non-invasive, safe, and accurate reproductive monitoring

At Zemya IVF & Fertility Clinics, every fertility treatment cycle is supported by regular, precise sonographic monitoring for optimal results.

How is a Transvaginal Ultrasound Done?

The procedure is simple, safe, and usually painless. Here is what to expect:

Preparation
  • No full bladder is required. In fact, you may be asked to empty your bladder before the scan.
  • You will lie on an exam table, similar to a gynecological exam.
Probe insertion
  • A thin, sterile ultrasound probe (transducer), about the size of a tampon, is gently inserted into the vagina.
  • A protective cover and lubricating gel are used to ensure comfort.
  • The probe emits sound waves that create images on the monitor.
Imaging and assessment
  • The doctor or sonographer moves the probe slightly to visualize the uterus, ovaries, and lining.
  • Measurements of follicles, endometrium, and any abnormalities are taken.
  • The scan usually lasts about 10–15 minutes.
Interpretation
  • Mild cramping or spotting is common and usually resolves within a day.
  • Normal activities can be resumed shortly after.
  • Results are typically available within 7–10 days.
Interpretation
  • Images are reviewed immediately, and your doctor may discuss the findings with you right after the scan.
  • Based on the scan, your fertility plan (such as timing for IUI or egg retrieval) is adjusted.

Is a Transvaginal Ultrasound Safe?

Yes. TVS is a completely safe, non-invasive, and radiation-free procedure. It can be repeated multiple times throughout the fertility cycle without harm to the ovaries, uterus, or developing follicles.

It is also safe to use in early pregnancy to monitor embryo development and confirm the pregnancy location.

Do’s and Don’ts before a Transvaginal Ultrasound

Do’s:
  • Empty your bladder before the scan for better image clarity
  • Wear comfortable clothing (you may need to change into a gown)
  • Inform the doctor if you’re having pelvic pain or discomfort
  • Be relaxed - TVS is a routine and painless test
Don’ts:
  • Avoid using vaginal creams, tampons, or having intercourse a few hours before the scan (unless advised otherwise)
  • Do not skip the scan if you're on your period - some scans are intentionally done during menstruation for diagnostic purposes
  • Don’t hesitate to ask questions about what’s being seen on the screen
